Back in March 2014, it was 3-2-1 lift off as Dollarsandarts second, the Intergalactics invaded Media One Hotel as the region’s first augmented reality exhibition.
Shoot and point the phone as the story is revealed behind the Art
I can’t believe it was over 3 years since ART fans, media and VIPs thronged the lobby of Dubai Media City’s Media One Hotel for the exclusive VIP launch of the exhibition…..
Sharpie shuffled as he opened the show over 3 years ago!
Over the next 6 weeks, over at Dollarsandart book of faces and instagram, Art tells a story as each and every INTERGALACTIC Artwork is shared….
Augmented reality (AR) company, Ogle, created a smart phone app to allow another dimension of interactivity with the art. For the first time in the region, each artwork featured AR, which will allowed art lovers to see the artist describe each piece, simply by holding their Ogle AR-enabled smart phone over each piece…..
So,for example, 2 of my favourites from the collection, had the following content when you pointed your android (your phone, not an R2D2) to the Artwork…..
$TAR WAR$ LIGHT – Art that tells a story
$TAR WAR$ DARK – Art that tells a story
Illustrating contrasts of life in a light hearted yet serious Star Wars space age way! All 28 videos available over at the dollarsandart youtube channel. Each one was filmed as the story behind the Art was shared but sadly rarely viewed….
Behind the scenes filming Art with a story
As the second Dubai $ project, the ‘hook’ was to give away 28 prints (one of each of the collection) and the Masterpiece, Middle East $pace Raider$ to encourage people to solve a riddle whilst enjoying the Art!
Got to be innit to be winnit & the lady with the halo!
Whilst every dollarsandart collection has the underlying theme of our relationship to money – with the dollar motif prominent in every piece. These 28 drew inspiration from my 1970s childhood on the Wirral and in the North West UK, from early home computers like the ZX Spectrum, Atari 2600 and Commodore 64, to film, TV, and technology. My aim was to speaks to people about the ‘throw-away’ society we live in, but also brings nostalgic memories that I missed whilst living in Dubai……
#2 of The INTERGALACTIC$ featuring the Atari 2600 from 1976
Science fiction is a strong theme, as is film – Star Wars and Flash Gordon – and TV – Dr. Who and Space 1999 – and how everything has been affected and challenged by commercialisation…..

Daleks, Weetabix box race of space from 1977 and retro images of a London Bus.
The aim of curating the works at the Media One Hotel was to make this collection more accessible to people, including the chance to win more than US$64,000 worth of unique art…..
BATMAN$ LANDING part of the great art giveaway(Batman’Sir)
After putting my heart, soul, and most of my old technology into these pieces, it was brilliant to see people’s faces as they toured the exhibition. When you put a lot of your personality into something, it can be scary anticipating public reaction, but the fact that three pieces were immediately snapped up as we opened the exhibition served to calm my fears!
#1 of The INTERGALACTIC$ ‘$pectrum on one’ featuring the 48k spectrum and original cassette style games and programming magazines from the early 1980’s
When visitors used the augmented reality app, they got the chance to enter the prize draw by answering a question, which then enters you in a draw to win the Masterpiece of the collection “MIDDLE EA$T $PACE RAIDER$” valued at US$20,000; one of 28 hand-embellished prints worth $1,600 each; one of four Moto G Motorola smartphones; two overnight stays at the Media One Hotel; five customised perfume VIP experiences by Fragrance Du Bois; an AED7,500 voucher to spend at Ride Bike Shop….
Not only that, during the 28 day show visitors were encouraged to try some bespoke perfume by Fragrance Du Bois adding an olfactory aspect to the show….
Art for all the senses! Not to be sniffed at…..
So it was a case of the old meeting the new – the technological twist ahead of it’s time back in 2014, still to this day in some regards meetings the clunky technologies of yesteryear that captured our imagination.
Rare Components used in 2 Intergalactic collectables used in #13 of The Intergalactics Phone$ Toothbru$he$ and Bea$tie$ pad$….
#14 Meydan Voyage ’64 Featuring an original Commodore 64 computer
……so within the Intergalactics was Artwork containing what is believed to be the oldest cellphone in Dubai and free reign to share my theory that we go through as many toothbrushes and we do cell phones, replacing them every 6-8 months!
Both of these are now showcased somewhere special in Dubai, revealed in the next article!
