What is it about Selfies? Selfie, Selfish, Selfie….
‘Look at Me, Look at ME!’
Painters used to be the only people capable of self-portraiture, but now we are all at it. As I’m digging deeper with the Saatchi Gallery show, Selfie to self expression, celebrating the selfie that draws on the fact that vanity itself is now an art form….
You can enter to, details below after the fun bit, you see, as society becomes Artists that’s is fine by me as a Civil Engineer-cum-golf business bloke-cum Artist as I prepare to embrace the Saatchi gallery initiative, I wonder what if selfies would have been around back-in-the-day…

As technology moves on at a rapid rate of knots / nano-thingies it’s hard to avoid. Granted I only switch my ‘tech’ on at certain times of the day and pretty much always after my own self-imposed water/tech shed of 10pm.
So as Saatchi Gallery and Huawei have joined forces to offer artists, photographers, and enthusiasts around the globe a chance to show their most creative selfies internationally, and have their work exhibited at The Saatchi Gallery as part of the #SaatchiSelfie competition I’m warming up my entries…..
You’re allowed up to 6 you see and up to the time of writing I’ve 5 in mind! Here’s one of them, stay with me for a couple of lines…..

Right, back in the room, this international competition offers a chance to be part of a worldwide cultural phenomenon and for entrants to express themselves, by exploring and advancing the creative potential of the selfie today.
Entries must take the form of a photographic selfie. They encourage entries that are experimental and innovative that take the selfie in exciting new directions.
So why not enter and give it a go! The prize will be judged by a panel of renowned artists and forward-thinkers. The ten shortlisted winners will also receive Huawei’s newest smartphone, and the overall winner will receive a priceless photographic experience, to be announced at a later date so ‘innit to winnit’ and all that….
Seeing as this competition coincides with the launch of Saatchi Gallery and Huawei’s new exhibition, From Selfie to Self-Expression it’s a must see for me sometime between the opening on 31st March – 30th May 2017. It will be the world’s first exhibition exploring the history of the selfie from Velazquez to the present day, while celebrating the truly creative potential of a form of expression often derided for its inanity I’ll be checking it out in a couple of weeks time. All this showing alongside examples of many influential artists’ work will be selfies that have quickly become icons of the digital era – from the beautiful and sublime to the mad, bad and downright dangerous.
