Created by Gerry Anderson and aired between 1975 – 1977, Space 1999 was another show that characterized Jim’s childhood. In the opening episode, nuclear waste from Earth explodes in a catastrophic accident on September 13,1999, knocking the Moon out of orbit and sending it, and the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha, into space.
Space1999 drew a great deal of visual inspiration from Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. As a boy Jim also drew great visual inspiration from the character Dr Helena Russell, a nurse played by Barbara Bain and his first official crush. She was lovely.
The series was the last production by the partnership of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and was the most expensive series produced for British television up to that time. The next Jim heard about 1999 was the 1982 song of the same name by Prince and this classic is one of his best known tracks; with the single featuring in the work. It seemed such a long time into the future listening to 1999 in 1982 and now it seems so long ago!
