High time for an update! It seems like yesterday since Dollarsandart publicly landed, uninvited into the wonderful world of art but it’s been almost six months. It’s been on helluva ride and the least I can do is share with you what’s been happening since March 3rd 2013 – the start of the journey when the 28 originals of The Money Collection were showcased at the perfect venue : The Media One Hotel, home of The Dubai Dollar Project.
During the 28 days of The Dubai Dollar Project over 1,200 entries where received to win one of 28 hand embellished prints valued at $1,600 each and the $20,000 Masterpiece 28 – INDULGEN$E, summing up my decade in Dubai.
This footage courtesy of The Media One Hotel covers it all brilliantly:
Throughout the project Media interest grew as Dubai media, Russia Today, China Central T.V and Indian Media picked up on the project, all can be found on the Dollarsandart youtube channel and will be featured on this blog from time to time.
Hats off and general applause due to design legend Lee Mcgorie and social Media goddess Claire and the City, Will Rankin of Middle East Living and all the team at Media One hotel who thankfully tolerated my passion for this project.
What a buzz! Since INDULGEN$E was given away for $1 to lucky winner, art lover and Dubai resident Richard Fitzgerald momentum really built. Of the 28 hand embellished prints won for only $1 each, 22 were claimed leading to this final piece being commissioned:
With the reveal of not only the closing piece of The 2013 Dubai Dollar Project but also the Dollarsandart charity of choice:
Something was missing from Dollarsandart – a charity aspect, to give it more purpose and we found the perfect fit.
Dollarsandart charity of choice : Joining Jack
Having heard former Rugby League star Andy Johnson talk about his son, Jack, who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, DMD, it all fell into place. There is no cure for DMD at the moment and the aim is to find a cure raising money to fund research to find an effective set of treatments to combat this condition. 10% of all Dollarsandart sales are earmarked for this fine cause.
Joining Jack founder Andy Johnson covers it all here:
Since the Dubai Dollar Project closed – The Money Collection
The aesthetic value of the works are one thing but the stories behind them and what they mean to people really are the key. This was illustrated during the closing bash hosted by Lime & Tonic & Middle East Living up on the 8th floor at Media One hotel. Over 40 art fans gathered to dig deeper, enjoy canapes & a beverage whilst knowledgeably rubbing their chins intelligently, questioning the meanings behind some of The Money Collection.
Since the project closed more people have been increasingly curious to the rationale behind the works and feature on the Dollarsandart youtube channel that gives a 90 second overview of each piece.
The following seven Money Collection originals have been sold to the following suitable homes:
Number 3 : $ING A $ONG OF $IXPENCE (Acquired by a private investor, Palm Island, Dubai)
Number 4 – $PLURG AT THE BURJ (Acquired by a Private Investor, U.A.E & U.K)
Number 7 : DOLLAR $HOT (Acquired by D.I.F.C venue Rogue Traders, opening end 2013)
Number 8 : H’PENNIES 1971 (Acquired by a Private Investor : Dubai)
Number 14. TABLE TENNI$ (Acquired by a private investor : D.I.F.C Dubai)
Number 28 : INDULGEN$E (given away for $1)
Number 2 of The Money Collection, YE$ MI$$ MONEYPENNY has been earmarked for a James Bond charity auction in Dubai in early 2014:
What of the remaining 21 original works from The Money Collection? Seven are curated in The TRIBE gym, Dubai Marina. The remaining pieces will be ‘ scattered’ throughout Dubai by the end of 2013 through sale, curation or well, let’s see where the wind takes them!
What are you up to now, Jimbo?
I currently enjoy inspiring companies by delivering corporate commissions and linking them into their Vision, Mission & Values and enthusing others through my work. I’m pursuing that path with relentless vigour but remembering to take time out to GO! Smell the flowers, of course.
At the moment I’m ‘keeping it real’ in an autumnal U.K (raining but in a refreshing way) busy delivering a commission (Imagine that in an out of office email!) working with a new medium, GLA$$. The story behind how that all started was thanks to a chance find of an unused Liverpool versus Manchester United ticket. I’m also heading Wigan way next week to hook up with Andy Johnson, the founder of the Dollarsandart Charity of choice, Joining Jack.
The 2014 Dubai Dollar Project
In between dodging real weather and kicking around leaves the in the U.K I’m busy planning the 2014 Dubai Dollar Project – INTERGALACTIC$ that will be at The Media One Hotel in March 2014 and will be something to remember. Think retro, think space with out of this world with a nostalgic quirkiness but with a serious undertone to encourage people to question their values, lifestyles and ultimately what money means to them.
Regular updates of potential items to feature in the Intergalactic$ Collection are snapped on Dollarsandart Instagram, Dollarsandart Pinterest, with money related snippets at the Dollarsandart Facebook page and here at the blog together with the usual musings on twitter @dollarsandart & @flowersmeller.
Thanks for reading this far, unless you scrolled down to the bottom? you did, didn’t you? Ideally this sohuld have been posted in bite sized chunks as the project gathered pace but hey, it was a steep learning curve! Don’t worry this post is as much for my therapy and taking stock as it is to bombard you in our over saturated world of communication.
Comments, shares and group hugs welcomed folks, it’s a lonely road at times!
