This 6th Dollarsandart collection nicely transitioned the celebrity mingling aspect of the brand to a grounded, nostalgic and community based look at the past with ‘Cereal$’ as the subject matter. This collection was the cornerstone of exploring Time & Money during the year and the 2016 Dubai $ Project in collaboration with Al Quoz print-lovers Toil & Tinker. With a name like ‘Wheat’ how couldn’t I?!
It’s a delicate balance thesedays!
This month long exhibition ran during April 2016 and for the first time in the 4 years of Dubai $ Projects showcased affordable prints for sale, featuring 12 colourful Dollarsandart collectable prints inspired by the cereals that I enjoyed growing up with. Through student life and as a present day late night treat remaining a reassuring sugary consistent in my life. This laid back, community event showcased what the Art market and the public has been asking for from dollarsandart – more accessibility and more affordability!

I’m adamant that Time is an even more important commodity than Money thesedays and wanted to share an affordable pop art collection that features the quirky dollar motif prominent in every piece. This set of visually stunning retro art, pulling in the knowledge of team toil and tinker, drew inspiration from cereal boxes during my childhood in the UK through to the comfort eating of Shreddies and Special K both as a student and an executive with late night munchies!
The collection ‘Cereal$’ features quirky adaptations on the boxes of the Snap, Crackle and Pop (art) of Rice Kri$pie$, to my playground nickname, $hredded Wheat.
Childhood fave – CORNFLAKE$
The creative team at Toil & Tinker transformed their grrrrrrreat space in Al Quoz and a brilliant sense of community welcoming Artists, families, kids, dogs and various passers by over a 6 week period. Branded deck chairs, watches, life size dollar figures & bespoke ice-creams were on display throughout the courtyard adding an extra fun element to the event.
Toil and Tinker, G.M Paul said: “We were delighted host the prolific Jim Wheat’s dollarsandart with this unique print collection that showcases our Risograph, Digital and Screen printing techniques included our own mini Dollarsandart cereal boxes.”
A series of educational and community based programmes were held at the venue included, visitors trying their hand at doodling with the world’s first 3D printing pen, the 3Doodler. A free workshop was offered during the exhibition as visitors will be encouraged to literally ‘make money’, following on from the popularity of this in the Heroe$ & Villains exhibition at DIFC back in 2015.
This 4th Dubai $ Project had even more of a community feel to it with Al Noor Special needs unveiled their dollarsandart collaboration ‘$PECIAL K’ crowned the bonus 13th and final Artwork in this that went under the hammer at the Al Noor gala dinner raising over $5,000 for a great cause. Al Noor staff were a great addition to the launch of the collection showcasing some of their homegrown products for sale on the day.
I also enjoyed will be unveiling of the winners of a Time & Money Art contest launched exclusively at Regents International School….
Fragrance power house ‘Fragrance Du Bois’ built on their support by showcasing an array of fragrances and that money really does grow on trees through wise investment!
An olfactory experience added another dimension to the exhibition as the purveyor of fine smells reached out to offer visitors forestry investment as money grows on trees!
Media wise, Social media partners TINT worked their aggregation magic at the event in line with the Time & Money theme showing retro cereal adverts!
With this unpretentious setting the community dug deep even provided dollarsandart gorilla branded deck chairs for visitors to kick back in!
Toil & Tinker also showcased The Story of Money catalogue of works featuring the story so far with five collections and over 100 original artworks plus his prolific work throughout the community and ‘how does he do it?’
Prints after the event are now deemed as ‘collectable’ and limited to 19 or 50 depending on the style you require just head over to the toil and tinker shop or contact me email@example.com for more information.
Rationale and objectives
I’m glad the CEREAL$ collection encouraged people to think back to special times in their life as the balance of Time & Money become even more relevant. Our search to understand what makes us happy (or happier) goes back centuries. As does our enduring belief that if we just do the right thing, happiness will follow – that additional happiness will be doled out to us because we earned it, not due to the largess of a benevolent being.
“Happiness is not a reward – it is a consequence” often by doing the right things at the right time. Unpacking my fun print collection on the dollar motif in this collection thankfully attracted the right parts of the community together whilst we hack on unashamed of the positivity of using money as a force for good as time marches on with my favourite CEREAL$ along the way!
